With today marking International Surfing Day we thought what better day to tell you all about why we think YOU should learn to surf.

1. Health Benefits

Surfing is full of health benefits. We all know we should get outside and exercise more and what better place to do it then in the ocean. People often talk about the health powers of the, and it really can cure a bad day. Surfing is physically very challenging, and you do use parts of your body that you may not even know you had. You will ache after surfing, but it’s all worth it.

2. Good for your mind

As we touched upon, surfing is fantastic for your mind. It helps you escape any negative thoughts you may be having. It can calm you, invigorate you and awaken all your senses.

3. Social

Surfing is a great solo sport and can also be wonderfully social. Surfers tend to be a pretty friendly bunch and with lots of social groups forming across the UK to bring surfers together.

4. Travelling

Surfers often find themselves travelling the world on the hunt for perfect waves, and if you get hooked on the sport (which we are sure you will), then you’re going to want to book a flight to somewhere tropical to surf and being adventuring.

5. Outdoor Lifestyle.

Nothing beats being outside on the beach. Instead of spending hours in the gym why not spend a few hours in the surf. Not only will you keep fit but you will also get to immerse yourself in nature!

6. Respect Nature

Most surfers find themselves opting for a cleaner way of living, reducing their plastic pollution and carbon footprint because they want to keep the ocean and beaches clean and healthy for the beautiful creatures that live in it. With excellent surf based charities like Surfers Against Sewage, it’s near impossible to not take more notice of your environment when you’re out in the surf every day.

7. Confidence

Always wanted to surf but don’t think you’re confident enough to give it age, well, imagine if you did learn to surf and proved yourself wrong. What else could you do? Surfing will make you more confident! Taking on new challenges, learning new skills and breaking outside your comfort zone will only have a positive effect on your life.

8. Stress Release

Often get a little stressed after a hectic day at work or feel like it is all a bit too much at times, well that’s ok. Surfing is a great way to de-stress. Grab a board and head out to the ocean, leaving those stresses on the beach.

9. Fun

Surfing is such a fun sport; you won’t be able to stop yourself from smiling and laughing. Don’t take it too seriously enjoy being out in the water and embracing the waves and wipeouts.

10. What do you have to lose!

Surfing is an excellent sport that you need to give it a go. Book yourself a surf lesson and learn to ride the waves, you won’t regret it.
